The softness made possible by this medium has always felt to me like a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of childhood. Pastel is colored chalk, which itself is fragile and impermanent. Sealing with a fixative settles the dust, and putting the finished piece under glass preserves it, just like a captured moment in time. All pastel portraits are designed on acid-free Canson paper made in France.

If you are interested in a large-scale painting that will make a bold statement in your home oil is the only option. Sizes start at 48x60 and go up from there.
